Questions 22-31 - Science -  December 2019 International SAT Test QAS

This passage is adapted from Nick Lane,Oxygen:The Molecule That Made the World.©2002 by Nick Lane.

Summary:It mainly tells that a group of scientists who study crustaceans obtained new discoveries about polar gigantism by studying an animal called amphipods. The traditional view is that it is caused by the inverse relationship between body size and temperature, but such a direct relationship cannot explain polar gigantism well. Then scientists put forward a new point of view, that is, the true inverse relationship is not body size and temperature, but body size and oxygen content. Subsequent studies confirmed this relationship. Finally, the article pointed out that if the atmosphere warms, the temperature rises and the oxygen content decreases, then the giant amphipods may die.

Questions 42-52 -Social  Science -  December 2019 International SAT Test QAS

This Passage is adapted from Melinda Wenner Moyer,"The Myth of Antioxidants."©2013 by Scientific American,a division of Nature America,Inc.

Summary:The article mainly elaborates on the problem of aging. The mechanism of aging is due to the oxidation of free radicals in the body that causes cell damage and thus triggers aging. But an experiment conducted by Gems, a scientist, found that the worms that promote oxidation did not speed up their death, and their life span was the same as that of normal worms. Later other scientists also found similar results-anti-oxidant to the longest-lived mice, and their lifespan did not increase. These results questioned the traditional view, and on the contrary confirmed the positive effects of high-energy molecules such as free radicals. Based on this, the human perception of aging needs to be revised again.
